description
A world forum for contemporary art and the “longest open-air museum in the world”, the Allée des Arts is a seafront promenade stretching for around 1km along the beach at Port-Barcarès, the seaside resort in the commune of Le Barcarès in the Pyrénées-Orientales. Under the impetus of Senator Gaston Pams and gallery owner John Craven, the Allée des Arts was created in 1969 to house a group of monumental contemporary sculptures. Port-Barcarès, with this 1st creation of an open-air public art museum in France, was banking on contemporary art and an avant-garde position in 1969. In 2010, along with several other sites in the seaside resort of Port-Barcarès, the avenue was awarded the “20th Century Heritage” label.
